1975年6月7日，Allen Iverson在美国弗尼吉亚州的汉普顿诞生了，而他的母亲安（Ann）当时年仅16岁。就在他出生后不久，父亲就失了踪。

Only father figure Iverson就是他母亲的男朋友Micheal Freeman，但Freeman的大部分时间是在监狱中度过的，因为他为了生计去卖毒品和赃物。而这位Freeman现在还在弗尼吉亚州监狱里

因此，Iverson自小就生活在相当困苦的环境里，母亲安一直忙碌地工作，就只为支付基本的生活费用，和他的三个孩子（Allen,Brandy and Iiesha），他们还常因没钱付账单而被停水停电。

Iverson在孩提时代有时坐在房中数小时，画着令人眼花缭乱的草稿，随后同一群猪朋狗友外出。但在某个夏天，他的８个朋友都被杀。

Iverson从9岁开始打篮球，虽是一名杰出的职业篮球员，但艾弗森儿时却不很喜欢这项运动。他说：“我最初喜欢踢足球，现在还是一样。我根本就不想打篮球，是在母亲的影响下，才逐渐喜欢上这项运动。为此，我会永远感激她。”
