左咡

他妹妹们不是都在我们这里吗。这人从那里有这一切的事呢。And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

左咡

他们就厌弃他。（厌弃他原文作因他跌倒）耶稣对他们说，大凡先知，除了本地本家之外，没有不被人尊敬的。And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.

左咡

耶稣因为他们不信，就在那里不多行异能了。And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

左咡

[BR]那时分封的王希律，听见耶稣的名声，At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,

就对臣仆说，这是施洗约翰从死里复活，所以这些异能从他里面发出来。And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

左咡

起先希律为他兄弟腓力的妻子希罗底的缘故，把约翰拿住锁在监里。For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.

左咡

因为约翰曾对他说，你娶这妇人是不合理的。For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

左咡

希律就想要杀他，只是怕百姓。因为他们以约翰为先知。And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

左咡

到了希律的生日，希罗底的女儿，在众人面前跳舞，使希律欢喜。But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

左咡

希律就起誓，应许随他所求的给他。Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
