左咡

律法本是藉着摩西传的，恩典和真理，都是由耶稣基督来的。For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

左咡

从来没有人看见神。只有在父怀里的独生子将他表明出来。No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

左咡

约翰所作的见证，记在下面。犹太人从耶路撒冷差祭司和利未人到约翰那里，问他说，你是谁。And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

左咡

他就明说，并不隐瞒。明说，我不是基督。And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

左咡

他们又问他说，这样你是谁呢，是以利亚吗。他说，我不是。是那先知吗，他回答说，不是。And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

于是他们说，你到底是谁，叫我们好回覆差我们来的人。你自己说，你是谁。Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

左咡

他说，我就是那在旷野有人声喊着说，修直主的道路，正如以赛亚所说的。He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

左咡

那些人是法利赛人差来的。（或作那差来的是法利赛人）And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

左咡

他们就问他说，你既不是基督，不是以利亚，也不是那先知，为什么施洗呢。And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

左咡

约翰回答说，我是用水施洗，但有一位站在你们中间，是你们不认识的，John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
